New Instagram Feature You Should Know About
Since the introduction of the Notes feature in 2022, users have been able to share brief text updates with followers without needing to post an image or story. Now, Instagram has expanded this feature, allowing you to leave notes on other people’s posts as well.
As you can see from the example at the top of this article, Instagram has added an “Add Note” option to Reels and Feed posts. By selecting this option, you can leave a note or comment that is visible only to followers who follow you back or people on your Close Friends list.
Much like the original Notes feature, these comments come with a time limit. While profile and inbox notes are visible for up to 24 hours, comments on Feed posts and Reels will stay live for up to three days. According to Meta, this feature gives you a way to share your “boldest thoughts and unfiltered opinions” more freely.
This update seems like a step toward promoting authenticity on the platform by allowing users to express themselves in a more controlled environment. It’s particularly handy for discussing sensitive or controversial topics, as you no longer need to worry about everyone seeing your thoughts.
This feature follows updates Instagram made to the Notes feature earlier in the year, which introduced prompts, mentions, and likes. After a relatively quiet couple of years for Notes, these updates signal that Meta is working to make it a more significant part of the Instagram experience.
At this point, Instagram hasn’t provided specific details on how to access this new feature. If you’d like to give it a try, ensure your Instagram app is up to date. If the option still isn’t available, it may just be a matter of waiting until the feature is fully rolled out — I simply opened the app and received a notification when the update became available.
